UK DANCERS AND DANCE COMPANIES:

Winner of BBC Young Dancer 2015 Connor Scott and Vidya Patel, winner in South Asian Dance Category will perform first and second half curtain-raisers at the Faces of Dance performance in the Forum Theatre

An early version of the dance duet, which will be performed by Vidya and Connor, was recently performed as the curtain-raiser at Navadisha 2016 – International Dance Conference

Billingham Festival 2013 is proud to present to you the line-up of outstanding dance companies from across the globe and the UK, presenting a variety of Dance Styles, from traditional to contemporary dance companies inspired by World Traditional Cultures, including Royal Chinese, Latin American, Basque and Kathak Dance, Chinese Martial Arts, Precision Clogging and Hip Hop, there this something for everyone to enjoy …

We are also delighted to bring to you performances by outstanding UK professional companies, whose appearances at our festival are funded by Arts Council, including, ZENDEH, the cross art form theatre company, Sonia Sabri Dance Company and "The Lock In" Dance Show, direct from Glastonbury Festival.

BILLINGHAM FESTIVAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS DEDICATED TO CELEBRATING OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY in 2014



We would like to inspire local schools and pupils to learn about the Festival history, its heritage and multi-cultural arts and to encourage children and young people to engage in their own projects to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Festival as their local heritage.

Billingham Festival Community Projects 2013



Stories of the World Project with ZENDEH Cross Art Compaany





Community Workshops with ZENDEH


ZENDEH also delivered workshops for school teachers and Fracture Theatre performance group

Sonia Sabri South Asian Dance Residency in Middlesbrough Schools


The dance residency with Sonia Sabri Dance Company took place in June 2013 in Chandler’s Ridge Primary School and MacMillan Academy, where students learned the basics of contemporary Kathak dance style.

Sonia Sabri South Asian Dance Workshops with Schools and Tees Valley Dance Groups


Sonia Sabri Dance Company also held workshops in 3 other schools The Kings Academy, Unity City Academy and Eastside Primary School and with 3 local dance groups: My Dance UK, Zoe Bellamy Dance and Dance factory North East. Overall 145 young people enjoyed the experience.

Sonia Sabri MacMillan School Residency students performance


As the result of Sonia Sabri Company residency the students of MacMillan Academy created a dance piece which they performed at the festival opening ceremony.

Sonia Sabri Chandlers Ridge School Residency students performance


The students of Chandler’s Ridge Primary School also created a dance piece which they performed as a “Curtain Raiser” before Sonia Sabri Company’s performance of “Jugni”

Billingham Fracture Theatre and Zoe Bellamy Dance School


Billingham Fracture Theatre led by Mattie Campbell and Zoe Bellamy Dance School worked with the festival to create new dance pieces, which they performed at the Opening Ceremony



Tapshoe & Tutus Dance School of Billingham


For the first time we welcomed new addition to the festival parade – Billingham “Tapshoes & Tutus”, who also performed on stage during the parade at the Opening Ceremony



Tapshoe & Tutus Dance School of Billingham in workshops


“Tapshoes & Tutus”students age 3 to 10 also enjoyed seven workshops with all the international dance groups during the festival



World Cultural Ambassadors Project


World Cultural Ambassadors Project with Billingham Schools was continued this year and besides Billingham South Community Primary School and Scelton Primary School, it included Northfield Secondary School.

Contemporary African Dance Residency 2012


Contemporary African Dance Residency with Keisha Grant and Keneish Dance is taking place in Billingham South Community Primary School and at the ARC with Secondary School Students.

As a result of the Residency the students will perform a specially created Dance Piece at the festival Opening ceremony on Saturday, 11th August and as a curtain raiser at the performance of VIGOUR by Keneish Dance at the ARC Theatre on Monday, 13th August

World Cultural Ambassadors 2012


Following the huge success of the World Cultural Ambassadors Project 2011, four Primary Schools -St Pauls RC Primary, Billingham, St John The Evangelist Primary, Billingham, Holy Rosary Primary, Billingham and Skelton Primary School - are taking part in the Project this year.

Sensory Arts & Storytelling 2012


Billingham Festival teamed up with Daisy Chain to introduce Sensory Arts & Storytelling at the festival 2012

Children and their families will be treated to a visit from Hawaiian Pacific Magic performers and Tell Me A Tell Theatre company at the Daisy Chain Farm in Norton .

They will also attend a concert at the festival Arena

The project is funded by Tees valley Community Foundation

Stories of the World at Stockton Libraries


Stories of the World Project with Stockton Libraries was supported by Stockton Library Services. The International performers from Guadeloupe, North Cyprus, Romania, Hawaii and Indonesia delighted the children who attended the Stories of the World Sessions at Thornaby Central Library, Stockton Central Library, Norton Library, Billingham Roseworth Library and Billingham Bedale and Roseberry Libraries, by telling them stories from their countries accompanied by music and dance.

Fracture dance 2012


The festival joined forces with Billingham's Own Fracture Theatre to create a dance for the Opening Ceremony using a combination of traditional and street dance styles. The Fracture Theatre dancers led by Mattie Campbell will also perform their work at the family Concert on Sunday, 12th August and at the festival Closing Ceremony. They are also preparing a few surprises in Billingham Town Centre during the festival week

New Dance Work Showcase 2012


Earlier in May 2012 the dance students from Arts & Media School, Teesside University enjoyed the intensive African Contemporary workshop with Keisha Grant, Artistic Director of Keneish Dance.





World Cultural Ambassadors 2011


World Cultural Ambassadors Project 2011, five Primary Schools -Billingham South Community Primary School, Billingham Bewley Infant Primary School, Billingham Roseberry Junior Primary School, Whitehouse Primary School, Stockton and Ash trees Primary School (learning difficulties) - took part in the Project in 2011.

BILLINDA (Billingham International Youth Dancers) Group was created in Autumn 2003 with the aim to stage a special programme of dances to celebrate 40th Billingham International Folklore Festival 2004 and give young children a unique opportunity and experience of performing at such a prestigious event, alongside the International Groups from all over the World. Most of the dancers have had no formal dance training, but simply came together to enjoy dancing.

Since then BILLINDA appeared every year at the Billingham Festival till 2009, performed at the Middlesbrough Music Fest 2006 (Middlesbrough Town Hall) and at Billingham Carnival 2004 & 2005.

BILLINDA performed on the Family Day of the Festival, at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. They also performed at the Children's Club and hosted the beginners International Youth Dance Workshops
